WillWilliam – Social Work Student  2023

“After a long week of work and study, the students staying with me at the house decided to grab some drinks and a cheese board and head down to the Fairburn dam to watch the sunset. One of our favourite spots in Emerald and doesn't seem to disappoint every time we go there. On early Saturday morning, Sam and I were invited by fellow student Caleb to do some tubing at the dam. Even today, we are still sore but it was heaps of fun. After going out on Saturday night, we thought that rather than doing nothing all day, we decided to head to Backdown Tableland to see the waterfalls and hike and Swim. It is by far one of the most beautiful places I have seen, the nature and water were so relaxing, and seeing the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art was amazing. It is a place I will definitely go back to while on placement here and would highly recommend anyone to go and see it.”

Having a placement with JCU CRRH in Emerald has been an amazing experience! I am incredibly grateful for the privilege of traveling to Mount Isa with the JCU team for a conference where I learned about the healthcare system in rural and remote communities. I have also had the opportunity to attend local community events and assist with the JCU stall. It has been very interesting to speak with the locals and reflect on the differences between city and country lifestyles.

My placement follows a service learning model, and both the teams at JCU and my placement environment have been incredibly kind and welcoming. I am so thankful for the opportunity to have a placement with JCU CRRH in Emerald and would highly recommend it to anyone who is considering this location!

BronteBronte – OT Student 2023

Living and learning in Emerald and with JCU Centre for Rural and Remote Health provided us with an opportunity to travel to Mount Isa in our first week of placement to attend the "Are You Remotely Interested" conference. During our time at the conference, we were fortunate to meet and network with some of the leaders in the rural and remote health workforce and hear some amazing speeches about how best to support the communities we work in and with.

Our placement at a local kindergarten has been a rewarding experience. The service-learning nature of our placement means we've been able to address a need of the community which provides a great sense of purpose. The staff, not only at JCU, but also at our placement site have been super welcoming and supportive.

On the weekends, Emerald and the surrounding areas have a great selection of community markets and events to visit. Attending these has been a great opportunity to explore more of the local scenery and immerse ourselves in the community. I'm looking forward to exploring more of the central Queensland area during the remainder of my time in Emerald.

My placement at JCU CRRH Emerald has been a special journey that I highly recommend to others. The moment I stepped into this organisation, I was met with immense support and a welcoming atmosphere both at the centre and within the community. At JCU CRRH Emerald, professional growth and development are prioritised, presenting numerous opportunities to enhance skills and explore new ideas in various settings. I took part in a falls prevention program which was a very fulfilling experience. What also made my experience truly special was the abundance of social opportunities available on weekends which allowed me to explore and connect with the surrounding towns of Emerald. Getting out and about allowed me to unwind and recharge, creating a healthy work-life balance. Additionally, they fostered a sense of community within the organisation, strengthening our bonds and making my time at Emerald even more enjoyable. My time spent in Emerald has flown by, and not only broadened my horizons but also inspired me to consider returning to work out west in Central Queensland after graduation. If you seek a rewarding placement experience that offers not only professional growth but also unforgettable adventures, I wholeheartedly recommend this one!
